PNC is paying new checking customers up to $400 this summer.

Bank bonuses don't get much more straightforward than this one. PNC Bank is running a new-customer checking promotion worth up to $400, and the requirements are the same ones you've seen from us a hundred times: open the account, move your direct deposit, wait for the cash.

The catch — and there's always a catch — is that the $400 tier requires a hefty direct deposit total. Most people will realistically be looking at the $100 tier. Let's break down both.

Deadline: Open your account by August 31, 2026. The offer runs through the end of the month and applies to accounts opened online through PNC's offer page (or in a branch with a coupon requested from that page).

How to Earn the Bonus

  1. Open a new eligible PNC checking account online via the links on PNC's bonus offer page by 8/31/2026.

  2. Receive qualifying direct deposits within your first 60 days. You need at least $500 total for Virtual Wallet, or $5,000 total for Virtual Wallet with Performance Select, deposited into the Spend account.

  3. Wait for your money. The bonus posts 60–90 days after you meet the requirements and shows up on your statement as "Credits Check Reward."

What Counts as a Direct Deposit

PNC defines a qualifying direct deposit as a recurring electronic deposit of a paycheck, pension, Social Security, or other regular income from an employer or outside agency.

What does not count: person-to-person transfers (so no Zelle or Venmo tricks), transfers from your other bank accounts, wire transfers, credit card cash advance transfers, or deposits made at a branch, ATM, by mobile deposit, or through the mail. This is real-paycheck-only territory.

The Fine Print That Actually Matters

  • New checking customers only. You're ineligible if you (or any signer on the new account) currently have a PNC consumer checking account, closed one within the past 12 months, or received a PNC checking promotion in the past 24 months.

  • Don't switch account types after opening. You must stay in the product you opened — changing it can alter or kill your bonus eligibility.

  • Keep the account open until the bonus arrives. Closing early forfeits it.

  • The bonus is taxable. Expect it to potentially show up on a 1099 come tax time.

  • Watch the monthly fee. Virtual Wallet runs $7/month and Performance Select runs $25/month unless you meet the waiver criteria. Check PNC's fee schedule for your account before opening so the fee doesn't eat your bonus.

Joe's Verdict

The $100 Virtual Wallet tier is the easy play here. A $500 total direct deposit over 60 days is a low bar — one or two paychecks clears it for almost anyone with regular income. That's a clean $100 for maybe twenty minutes of work updating your direct deposit form.

The $400 Performance Select tier is a solid payout, but $5,000 in direct deposits within 60 days means routing roughly $2,500/month of income through the account — and the $25 monthly fee makes it a worse home for your money long-term unless you qualify for the waiver. If your paycheck supports it, grab the $400 and decide later whether the account earns a permanent spot in your rotation.

Either way, the clock matters: accounts must be opened by August 31, 2026, and your 60-day direct deposit window starts at opening. If you're switching a payroll direct deposit, start the paperwork the same week you open the account — payroll departments are not known for their speed.

Bonus terms can change or end at any time and may vary by market. Always confirm the current offer details and fee schedules directly with PNC before opening an account. Bonus Joe is not affiliated with PNC Bank.
